FREDERIC REMINGTON
He pens a letter to his friend Burdick regarding traveling and mortgage payments
Autograph Letter Signed: "Frederick Remington", 1p, 4½x7. New Rochelle, N.Y., no date. To [his friend Joel] Burdick. On personal letterhead. In full: "I have a big mortgage to pay 20 January - let me know well in advance so I can arrange the time. We want a day in Montreal. Do I want a gun - guess not. Did you see my 'White Forrest' article in Harpers. Yours."  REMINGTON (1861-1909), a prolific Western artist, was chiefly known for his portrayals of the Old West, where he traveled extensively. His works, which usually depicted cowboys, Indians and horses, are notable for their authenticity of detail. Beginning in 1886, Remington produced more than 400 illustrations for the nation's ten leading periodicals, including "Century Magazine", in which Remington illustrated articles written by his friend, Theodore Roosevelt. In the 1890s, he covered the Cuban rebellion against Spain and then the Spanish-American War. Joel Burdick, who met Remington at Yale in the late 1870s, exchanged letters with the artist over many years. Endion, a scenic estate in New Rochelle, was Remington's home (1890-1908). Remington visited Montreal in 1890 and participated in a moose hunt, illustrating an article about the trip written for "Harper's" magazine that October by fellow traveler Julian Ralph Light spots in three corners. Light offsetting in blank upper right. Otherwise, fine condition.
