Photograph signed: "Frederick O'Neal/8-27-84". B/w, 8¼x10. African-American actor and producer Frederick O'Neal (1905-1992) earned critical praise in Anna Lucasta (Clarence Derwent Award, 1944) and Take a Giant Step (1953), reprising both roles on film. On TV he played Officer Wallace of Car 54 Where Are You? (1961-1963). In 1940, O'Neal co-founded The American Negro Theater in New York City, which produced 18 plays starring Black actors including Sidney Poitier, Harry Belafonte, Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis. O'Neal later served as President of the Actors Equity Association and Associated Actors and Artists of America (1970-1973) and was elected as a Vice President of the AFL-CIO in 1969. His union activism landed O'Neal on President Nixon's "enemies list." Fine condition.
