FREDERICK SEITZ. TLS: "F. Seitz" as President of The Rockefeller University, 1p, 8½x11. New York, N.Y., 1969 July 11. On letterhead of The Rockefeller University, Office of the President to Mr. Danny Franklin, Sunnyslope, Arizona. In full: "You will find enclosed an autographed photograph for your collection. Thank you for your letter of June 30. Sincerely yours". Enclosure not present. Seitz was President of Rockefeller University from 1968-1978. American scientist Frederick Seitz (born in 1911) co-invented the Wigner-Seitz unit cell, an important concept in solid state physics, with Eugene Wigner. Known for his prominent physics textbook, The Modern Theory of Solids (1940), Seitz served as President of the National Academy of Sciences (1962-1969) before becoming President of Rockefeller University. Shortly before his retirement from Rockefeller University, Seitz became a permanent consultant for the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. In 1989, William Hobbs, the CEO of R.J. Reynolds, said, "Dr. Seitz is quite elderly and not sufficiently rational to offer advice." Despite Hobbs' assessment, Seitz authored "Global Warming and Ozone Hole Controversies. A Challenge to Scientific Judgment", a report published by the George C. Marshall Institute in 1994, and he signed the Leipzig Declaration in 1995. Lightly creased. ¼-inch tear at upper left edge, light paper clip impression and stain at upper margin. Fine condition.
