Letter of recommendation handwritten, dated and signed by Parker, a Newark, New Jersey judge, in Newark in 1879. Also signed "I concur on the forgoing" by Frelinghuysen.
Autograph letter signed "Courtland Parker" by Parker and "I concur on the forgoing/Fredk J. Frelinghuysen" by Frelinghuysen.3 pages,4¾x8 ruled paper, 1 sheet folded, front and verso. With embossing in upper left corner. Newark, New Jersey, March 1, 1879. Addressed to M. V. Carmen, Esq. Frelinghuysen added a note to and signed this letter of recommendation, which was mostly handwritten by Courtland Parker and signed by a third unknown party. Parker wrote in part: "I have known you 25 or 30 years - You have been my client and my friend. I have known almost all about you... No one has, so far as I know, has so much as suggested any want of capacity for anything that you undertook, much less the absence of integrity or honor." Frelinghuysen (1817-1885, born in Millstone, New Jersey) represented New Jersey as a Republican in the U.S. Senate from 1866 to 1869 and 1871 to 1877 and was one of 15 members of the Electoral Commission that declared Rutherford B. Hayes the winner of the 1876 presidential election. As President Chester A. Arthur's Secretary of State (1881-1885), he obtained Pearl Harbor as a naval base. PARKER was a judge in Newark, New Jersey. Lightly toned and creased. Adhesive remnants on back of letter along spine. Ink shows through paper and is lightly smeared in several places. Folded in quarters and unquoted. Otherwise in fine condition.
