Autograph Letter signed: "F. W. Shelton", 1 page, 6¾x8, affixed to 7¾x8 sheet. No place, no date. To "G. F. E. Montpelier", in full: "Most Learned Counsellor, Enclosed is your left glove. Come again and this time bring your right with your hand in it. - Yours". Frederick William Shelton (1814-1888) was an American Episcopal minister who wrote poetry, novels and short stories, many of them reflecting his experience as a clergyman. In 1837 he published The Trollopiad, a verse satire responding to British travel writer Frances Trollops uncomplimentary Domestic Manners of the Americans (1832). His first published novel, Salander and the Dragon: a Romance of Hartz Prison (1850), has recently been reprinted. Shelton's writings appeared in major periodicals, including Harper's.
