WERNER "FRICK" GROEBLI (FRICK AND FRACK)
Handwritten note to interviewer George Sanders, signed with his Ice Follies name "Frick". "(N)Ice to be back in Portland ..." Signed above a color magazine photo of him performing a difficult stunt on the ice.
Autograph Note signed: "(N)ICE to be back/in Portland, after/3 years/Sincerely/Frick/'Ice Follies'/1968", 7x9¼. Unsigned color magazine photo affixed below signature shows him performing a difficult stunt on the ice. Swiss ice skaters Werner "Frick" Groebli (1915-2008) and Hansruedi Mauch joined the original Ice Follies as a comedy duo in 1937. Skating in Alpine lederhosen, they performed eccentric tricks that few skaters have been able to duplicate. Frick and Frack reached a worldwide audience when they began to appear in films, including Lady, Let's Dance (1944). "Frick & Frack" entered popular slang in many languages, signifying a pair belonging together, often with a derisive connotation. Mauch retired in 1953, but Groeblie continued to perform, solo or with other partners, until 1980. George Sanders, a radio/TV interview host in Los Angeles and later Portland, collected autographs from guests on his show. Left edge frayed from binding. Light surface creases. Fine condition.
