Photograph signed: "Fritz Wolff/1933". Sepia, 3½x5½. Shown in the title role of Richard Wagner's opera Parsifal. Tenor Fritz Wolff (1894-1957) began his opera training after service in the German army in World War I. He performed at the Bayreuth Festival from 1925 to 1941, famed for his portrayal of Loge in Wagner's Das Rheingold, but performing other parts too. His tenure at the Berlin State Opera (1928-1942) ended when he was recalled to military service in World War II. He returned from a Russian POW camp nearly blind, and so unable to resume his stage career, but he continued teaching music in Munich. Corners slightly worn. Slightly toned. Fine condition.
