Autograph Letter Signed: “G.H. Shute”. 1p, 5¾x7. August 24, 1969. To “Dear Mr.
Croxford”. In full: “Your letter addressed to the Postmaster of Tolpuddle, as been passed on to me
re the signatures of famous people./ I am the Warden of the Tolpuddle Memorial erected to the
martyrs by the T.V.C. in 1934./I am afraid there is [sic] not any famous people in Tolpuddle
connected with the tree./ On behalf of the National Trust I look after the tree./ Sorry not to be of
more help if my signature is of any use to you then you are welcome./ yours sincerely" George H.
Shute served as the warden of the Tolpuddle Memorial, which is near Dorchester, Dorset
in England. He also functioned as Dorset County Chairman. The Tolpuddle martyrs were
a group of six farmworkers who were charged for establishing a branch of the Labourers'
Union. Their sentencing in 1834 caused great uproar in England, and they served time in
Australia before returning to England in 1836. Letter affixed to a 7½x9½ sheet with clippings
about the Tolpuddle martyrs affixed. Binding holes along right edge. Ink notes throughout.
