Distinguished image, signed as Secretary of the Treasury, inscribed
to TV/radio interview host George Sanders
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To George Sanders - with all
best wishes -/G. William Miller/Secretary of the Treasury". B/w, 8x11¼.
G. William Miller (1925-2006), who served as Secretary of the
Treasury under President Jimmy Carter from August 6, 1979-January 20, 1981,
had previously been Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board (1978-1979). He
is the only person to have held both offices, Fed Chairman and Treasury
Secretary. At the time of his appointment to the Federal Reserve Board, Miller
was director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and several
corporations. As Fed Chairman, he was criticized for resisting an increase in
interest rates despite rising inflation. As Treasury Secretary he drew criticism
for a bailout loan to Chrysler, but the auto company repaid the loan ahead of
schedule. Miller had earlier served as Chairman of the Industry Council of
the President's Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity (1963-1965) and
was a member of the National Council on the Humanities (1966-1967). After
leaving government, Miller formed his own investment company and served on the
board of several charities. George Sanders, a radio/TV interview host in
Los Angeles and later in Portland, collected autographs from guests on his show.
