Signature of an original Dead End Kid who went on to lead a long acting career
Signature: "Gabriel Dell", in blue ink. 5x3 card. Gabriel Dell (1919-1988), born Gabriel Marcel Del Vecchio, was one of the original Dead End Kids and one of the few members of that troupe to go on to a successful solo and adult career, including a Tony nomination for his performance in Lamppost Reunion (1975). Dell was cast as sickly T. B. in the hit Broadway play Dead End (1935-1937) and was brought to Hollywood to reprise the role in the 1937 film adaptation. He went on to appear in numerous films from the Dead End Kids, their Universal Pictures knockoff the Little Tough Guys, and, after serving in World War II, the Bowery Boys, including the James Cagney film Angels with Dirty Faces (1938), until 1950. He headed back to acting school after this and back to his roots on Broadway, appearing in nine plays on the Great White Way between 1955 and 1975 and five off-Broadway productions between 1962 and 1974. He also became a regular on The Steve Allen Show (1957-1960), where he developed a famous impression of Bela Lugosi as Dracula. In all, Dell appeared in over 80 movies and TV shows between 1937 and 1982, with recurring roles as Harry Grant in The Corner Bar (1972) and Frederick J. Hanover in A Year at the Top (1977). Corners lightly worn. Lightly toned. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
