Singer, songwriter, producer, Gail Davies (born 1948) was the first female record producer in country music and is credited by many as "The person who kicked open many of the closed doors on music row." Born in Oklahoma, her father was a frequent performer on the Louisiana Hayride, her early music exposure was traditional country but she was later influenced by the British invasion and Bob Dylan. She began her career in jazz, became a session singer at A&M and made her television debut with Roger Miller on the Merv Griffin Show in 1974. In 1976, Davies had moved to Nashville and signed as a staff writer at EMI Publishing. Still wanting to perform, she signed with Lifesong Records and released her first album in 1978-scoring three Top 20 singles. In 1979 she switched to Warner Bros. Records and began producing records. In 1981, the DJs of American voted her country music's Best New Female Vocalist. In 1990, Davies went to Capitol/EMI as a staff producer. In 2001, she received an IBMA award and a Grammy nomination. She remains a well respected writer, performer and producer. Fine condition.
