Galusha A. Grow sends an autograph letter to noted autograph

Cist. In full: "Mislaid among unanswered letters I find yours
which is my excuse for so long a delay in answering. P.S. Elected Speaker
[of the House] July 4, 1861 term closed March 4th 1863." GALISHA
A. GROW (1823-1907) represented Pennsylvania in Congress from 1851-1857
as a Democrat and from 1857-1863 as a Republican. He was Speaker of the
House for the first two years of the Civil War (1861-1863). Later serving as
President of the Houston & Great Northern Railroad Co. of Texas
(1871-1876), he returned to Pennsylvania and engaged in lumber, oil and
soft-coal pursuits. Grow went back to Congress, serving from 1894-1903.
CIST's collection of over 11,000 autographs was one of the largest and
most famous in the U.S. when it was sold in New York in 1886 and 1887; Cist had
died in 1885. Items from Cist's collection are very desirable. 2 tack
head-size light stains at blank left. Minor ink smudges at postscript. Fine
condition.
