GAMALIEL BRADFORD
Small card signed "I botanize, I herbanize: I am a/Naturalist of Souls." by "psychographer" Gamaliel Bradford in 1926. Bradford named his first autobiography A Naturalist of Souls.
Autograph quotation signed "'I botanize, I herbanize: I am a/Naturalist of Souls.'/Gamaliel Bradford/October 27, 1926". Pencil notations on verso. 4¾x3 card. American author Bradford (1863-1932) tried to make a career as a novelist, a poet and a playwright, but we know him best today as a prolific biographer. He was the first important biographer to write "psychographies", which sought to extract the subject's inner life in relatively short sketches by using important personality traits. His first successful biography in this vein was Lee the American (1912), but his best known work today is probably Damaged Souls (1923), which dealt with important Americans like Aaron Burr, P. T. Barnum and Thomas Paine. A semi-invalid who sometimes could only work a few minutes a day, Bradford nevertheless produced 114 biographies in two decades, including no less than three autobiographies: A Naturalist of Souls (1917), Life and I (1928) and Journal (1933). Other books include Confederate Portraits (1914), Portraits of Women (1916), Union Portraits (1916), American Portraits (1922), Wives (1925), As God Made Them (1929), Daughters of Eve (1930) and The Quick and the Dead (1931). Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Adhesive residue on verso (no show-through). Otherwise in fine condition.
