GARDNER REA
His original watercolor and gouache painting, used as a Playboy cartoon illustration in 1962. Gardner has signed the piece and added dialogue later used with the cartoon. Mounted to 15x20.
Original Art signed: "Gardner/Rea", 10¾x8 image, mounted to 15x20 (two surface). Untitled watercolor and gouache on board, to which Rea has added a pencil caption: "Waiter, What is this G-string doing in my soup?" This piece appeared as a cartoon in Playboy magazine, April 1962 (page 95), with the same gag line. Gardner Rea (1894-1966) a freelance writer and artist, began contributing cartoon illustrations and cover drawings for The New Yorker soon after its founding (1925), and his work was also featured in Life and in Playboy, as shown here. Critic Steven Heller said that Rea's cartoons were "bawdy without being obscene, absurd without being obscure." In addition to his own drawings, Rea supplied gag lines to other illustrators, including Charles Addams. Linear and numeric layout markings (unknown hand). Adhesive residue at edges and on mount from previous mounting. Mount worn with corners creased and chipped. Otherwise, fine condition.
