GARDNER READ
Inscribed youthful 5x7 photo, affixed to a larger page
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To R. Errington Ward - With/all good wishes/Gardner Read/10/11/39". B/w, 5x7, affixed to an 8½x11 page (two surfaces). American composer and music scholar Gardner Read (1913-2005) headed the composition department and music institutes in St Louis, Kansas City and Cleveland before becoming composer in residence at Boston University's School of Music. His Symphony No. 1 won first prize in a 1937 national competition sponsored by the New York Philharmonic Society. Read wrote Music Notation: a Manual of Modern Practice, considered the definitive text. Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009) a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II, went on to become President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate. Minor surface creases. Corners worn. Signature in poor contrast but legible. Otherwise, fine condition.
