Autograph Note signed: "7-2-78 To George= with thanks and all good wishes= Garson Kanin Burbank-". 5¼x7¾ album leaf. Garson Kanin (1912-1999), a Broadway actor in the 1930s, moved to Hollywood in 1938, directing screwball comedies featuring stars like Irene Dunne, Ginger Rogers and Cary Grant. Even bigger successes arrived when he began writing screenplays with his longtime wife, actress Ruth Gordon (d. 1985). He notched Oscar nominations for A Double Life (1947) and for the Tracy-Hepburn classics Adam's Rib (1950) and Pat and Mike (1952). He also wrote classic films for Judy Holliday, including Born Yesterday (1949). Although he wrote and directed a few more films through 1969, Kanin refocused his talents on the Broadway stage, earning three Tony nominations while directing such plays as The Diary of Anne Frank (1955) and Funny Girl (1964). Kanin also wrote numerous fiction and nonfiction books, including the popular Tracy and Hepburn (1971). Jagged at left edge from removal from bound book. Ink note (unknown hand) at upper margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
