All have signed in pencil Program Cover of the Royal Performance in the presence of Their Majesties The King & Queen, November 9, 1938, at The Coliseum, Charing Cross (London). Signed on front cover, which contains a purple silk ribbon at left edge and gold gilt Royal emblem on upper center. Affixed to inside of back cover is a printed advertisement for Julysia Tonic Hair Cream. Nominated five times, GARY COOPER (1901-1961) won the 1942 Academy Award for Best Actor for the title role in Sergeant York and won the Oscar in 1953 for the role of Marshal Will Kane in High Noon. He was also nominated for the role of Longfellow Deeds in Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, Lou Gehrig in The Pride of the Yankees and Robert Jordan in For Whom the Bell Tolls. Cooper was awarded a Special Academy Award in 1961. DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS, JR. (1909-2002) a movie producer as well as an actor, appeared in some 75 films, his father took little interest in his son's career, and the two did not become close friends until the early 1930s. His feature films included Stella Dallas (1926), Little Caesar (1930), The Prisoner of Zenda (1937), Gunga Din (1939) and Sinbad the Sailor (1947), and Fairbanks also appeared in a number of made-for-TV movies and hosted the anthology series, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. Presents (1952-1955). In the 1930s, he was married to actress Joan Crawford. In 1949, King George VI bestowed an honorary knighthood on Fairbanks for promoting Anglo-American friendship. GEORGE MOZART (1864-1947), and English music hall comedian, appeared in many films of the 1930s. RAYMOND NEWELL was an English operatic baritone. JIMMY WILDE (1892-1966), a Welsh boxer called "the mighty Atom," was the first World Flyweight champ. Wilde, who began boxing all challenges at fairgrounds, retired with a pro record of 137-5-2, including 99 knockouts. ARTHUR RIGBY (1900-1960) starred for England in international soccer competitions of the 1920s and 1930s. Bruce Green and Henry Dekker merit further research, as do the two unidentified signers. King George VI and his wife, Elizabeth, became King and Queen of England unexpectedly in 1936, upon the abdication of his older brother, Edward VIII. Known for their inspiring fortitude during the London blitz of 1940, King George VI and his queen were the parents of Queen Elizabeth II. Lightly foxed and soiled. Light wear at corners.
