Senator Gary Hart thanks Senator Moynihan for his fundraising efforts on his behalf
Autograph Letter signed: "Gary" as U.S. Senator, 1p, 6¼x8. On his personal Senate letterhead. Washington, D.C., undated, but date receipt stamp on verso reads: "1980 Apr 16". To "Dear Pat" [Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan]. In full: "Many thanks for your help in co-sponsoring my fund-raising event in New York with Maurice, Phyllis, and Peter. Your involvement will insure our success, and I want you to know how much I appreciate your friendship and support. Best regards," Hart, a U.S. Senator from Colorado (1975-1987), contended seriously for the Democratic Presidential nomination in 1984 and was the frontrunner in the 1988 contest until knocked from the race by charges of marital infidelity. He co-chaired the U.S. National Security Commission for the 21st Century, which warned in 1999 that a major terrorist attack on American soil was likely in the near future. Hart needed all the help he could get from popular Democrats like Moynihan in 1980, as he narrowly won re-election in a Republican-leaning state in the year Ronald Reagan's coattails helped the G.O.P. capture the Senate for the first in almost a quarter century. DIRECTLY FROM THE SALE OF THE ESTATE OF DANIEL PATRICK MOYNIHAN. Moynihan (1927-2003) represented New York in the U.S. Senate as a Democrat for four terms (1977-2001). A prolific author, he served in the administrations of four Presidents: Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford. Estate inventory numbers in left and upper margins. Date stamp on verso shows through lightly, touching one word of text. Otherwise, fine condition.
