Senator Hart sends a letter of thanks to Senator Moynihan referencing the Federal Election Commission
Typed Letter signed: "Gary", 1p, 7¼x10½. On letterhead of his law firm. Denver, Colorado, 1987 July 14. To Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Washington, D.C. In full: "I want you to know how much I appreciate your letter of support to the Federal Election Commission. You are obviously correct on policy grounds. This is an important ruling and precedent for future campaigns. But I also consider this a gesture of friendship and support, and greatly appreciate it personally. I miss you all, wish you well, and hope to see you soon. All best wishes." Hart has added a handwritten postscript: "Many thanks for organizing this effort, Patrick!" Hart, a U.S. Senator from Colorado (1975-1987), contended seriously for the Democratic Presidential nomination in 1984. He was the frontrunner in the 1988 Democratic contest until he was knocked from the race by charges of marital infidelity. He co-chaired the U.S. National Security Commission for the 21st Century, and, in a speech at the Yale Center for International and Area Studies on December 6, 1999, warned that sometime in the next 25 years, the United States would be attacked, most likely by a small group of foreign terrorists using weapons of mass destruction.
