GARY LEWIS
Typed lyrics for the 1965 pop hit This Diamond Ring, signed by
Lewis in blue felt tip
Typed lyrics signed: "Gary Lewis", in blue felt tip, 8½x11.
Gary Lewis (b. 1945) headed the pop music group Gary Lewis and the
Playboys, who played their first gig at Disneyland in 1964 without disclosing
that Lewis was the son of famed comedian Jerry Lewis. The band made it to
stardom after a 1965 appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. They had a
No. 1 hit in This Diamond Ring and 16 other Top 40 Hits, eight gold
singles and four gold albums, but only Lewis and keyboardist/accordionist John
Lewis remained in the band after 1965. The band broke up when Lewis entered
military service in 1967, but later re-formed, performing on Jerry's Labor Day
telethons for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. LEWIS, born in 1945,
was drummer and lead singer. Cash Box magazine voted him 1965 Male
Vocalist of the Year; Lewis beat out acts like Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra
for this honor. He was the only artist in the 1960's to chart his first
seven releases on Billboard's Top 10 list. Corners slightly worn and creased.
