The South African golfer signs a commemorative cover honoring the 1968 Open Championship at Carnoustie, which he won.
Commemorative Cover signed: "Gary Player", 6¾x4¾. British commemorative cover honoring The Open Championship at Carnoustie in 1968, British stamp affixed, pictorially postmarked Carnoustie, Angus, 13 July 1968, FINAL DAY. Stamped address to a collector at lower right. Card imprinted with "The Open Championship History" included in envelope. Player, who won The Open Championship (called the British Open outside the UK) in 1968, had previously won the event at Muirfield in 1959. South African golfer Gary Player (born in 1935), who is considered one of golf's greatest players, won 24 PGA tournaments (1958-1978), including seven majors. "The Black Knight" won all four of golf's most prestigious events: the British Open (1959, 1968, 1971, 1974), the Masters (1961, 1978), the PGA (1962-1971) and the U.S. Open (1965). After joining the Champions Tour, he won 19 additional tournaments. Player is also a renowned golf course architect, and he has received acclaim for breeding thoroughbred racehorses at his Gary Player Stud Farm. The Gary Player Foundation, founded in 1983, is dedicated to supporting the educational needs of rural and underprivileged children, and the foundation also supports other children's charities.
