Photograph signed: "Gary Player/Regards". B/w, 5x6½. Imprinted caption affixed at lower margin. Gary became the first resident of a foreign country to win the National Championship by shooting a 278 at Aronimink Golf Club, Newton Square, Pa., July 19-22." List of players and their standings in the tournament affixed at left margin. Player, from Johannesburg, South Africa, was first with score of 72-67-69 and 70 (for a total of 278) to capture the title and the purse of $13,000. South African golfer Gary Player (born in 1935), who is considered one of golf's greatest players, won 24 PGA tournaments (1958-1978), including seven majors. "The Black Knight" won all four of golf's most prestigious events: the British Open (1959, 1968, 1971, 1974), the Masters (1961, 1978), the PGA (1962-1971) and the U.S. Open (1965). After joining the Champions Tour, he won 19 additional tournaments. Player is also a renowned golf course architect, and he has received acclaim for breeding thoroughbred racehorses at his Gary Player Stud Farm. The Gary Player Foundation, founded in 1983, is dedicated to supporting the educational needs of rural and underprivileged children, and the foundation also supports other children's charities.
