GARY PLAYER and MILLER BARBER
Scorecard for the late Champion Golfer, Miller Barber (signed by Gary Player as marker) at the first round of the U.S. Open Championship on August 1, 1988.
Partly Printed Document Signed: "Gary Player" and "Miller Barber". 4p, 3¼x6. Official Round One Scorecard of the 9th U.S. Senior Open Championship held at course Number Three, Medinah Country Club, Medinah, Illinois, August 4-7, 1988, dated August 1, 1988. On page two, Player has signed as "marker." On page three, Barber has signed as "competitor." Barber shot a 75. Player, shooting a 270, won the 1988 Senior Open with a playoff victory over Bob Charles. South African golfer GARY PLAYER(b. 1935) is one of only five golfers to win all four Grand Slam titles: the British Open (1959, 1968, 1971, 1974), Masters (1961, 1978), PGA (1962-1971) and U.S. Open (1965). Hogan, Nicklaus, Sarazen and Woods are the other four. MILLER BARBER(1931-2013) was a professional golfer who won 11 PGA Tour victories and 24 Champions Tour victories. Known for his gangly form and wild swing, Barber took what others considered unconventional and developed his own style, baffling the world of golf with each championship win. In 1975, he was elected to the Arkansas Hall of Fame, and in 1996 he made the state's Golf Hall of Fame as well. Texas granted him the same distinctions in 1997 and 1999, making him a two-time Hall of Famer. Barber is the current record holder for combined PGA Tour and Champions Tour starts at 1297. Inside left shows 2 nicks at top edge, tears from being opened at an affixed label. At the right is surface wear at top edge corresponding to the left.
