GAYLORD NELSON. TLS: "Gaylord Nelson" as U.S.
Senator, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1974 February 7. On his United
States Senate letterhead, Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs, to Mr.
Herman R. Goldberg, Associate Commissioner for Equal Educational Opportunity,
Washington, D.C. Begins: "Dear Mr. Goldberg". In full:
"This is to express my concern about the problems which various Wisconsin
school districts, particularly those in the northern part of the state, are
having in qualifying for funding under the Emergency School Aid Act. A
member of my staff discussed this matter recently with Mr. Hewlitt of your
office. We understand the problems have arisen in connection with the
'desegregation plan' requirement in 185.11 of the regulations. The
districts concerned are Ashland, Bayfield, Bowler, Lac du Flambeau &
Lakeland U.H.S. in Minocqua. Efforts are being made to supply the necessary
documentation to fulfill this requirement and I shall view with keen interest
the outcome of this matter. Sincerely yours". Names of five additional
recipients of the letter typed at lower margin. Democrat Gaylord Anton Nelson
(1916-2005) represented Wisconsin in the U.S. Senate from 1963-1981.
During that time, he initiated Earth Day in 1970, and Nelson would also
his commitment to the environment by serving as a counselor to The Wilderness
Society in Washington, D.C. A former attorney and WWII veteran, Nelson began
his political career in the Wisconsin state senate (1949-1957) and was
Governor of Wisconsin from 1959-1962. In 1995, Nelson was awarded the
Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Bill Clinton. Lightly creased
