Sale Price $180.00
Signed 5x7 photo, warming up on the sidelines
Photograph signed: "Gene Bearden". B/w 5x7. In 1948, Gene Bearden (1920-2004) had one of the best rookie seasons a pitcher ever had. The knuckleball-throwing southpaw won 20 games while losing only 7 for the Cleveland Indians. He was bad news for Boston that year. Pitching on one day's rest, he beat the Red Sox in a one-game playoff for the AL pennant. He was just as deadly to the Boston Braves in the World Series, winning one complete game shutout, and saving the Series-ending Game 6 in relief. Although he pitched in the Majors for 5 more seasons, Bearden never again won more than 8 games in a year. He had suffered a serious a serious head wound when his cruiser - the USS Helena - was torpedoed and sunk by a Japanese submarine during World War II - and medication required to ease the pain it continued to cause him, is blamed for curtailing Bearden's baseball career. Ink note (unknown hand) and photographer's sticker on verso. Fine condition.
