Photo of Autry in western attire holding his guitar, Inscribed in person to collector Saul Goodman
Inscribed photograph signed: "To/Saul/Best Wishes/Gene Autry". B/w, 8x10. In the year he signed this photograph, Autry appeared in All American Cowboy, which featured a number of familiar faces from westerns and country music, including Chuck Connors, Johnny Crawford, Ken Curtis, James Drury, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, June Lockhart, Jock Mahoney, Charley Pride and Clint Walker. The previous year, he had been seen in archival footage in the documentary, Cowboys of the Saturday Matinee, and he would be featured in another documentary, Bad Girls in the Movies, in 1986. Gene Autry (1907-1998), the original singing cowboy, appeared in his first western in 1934. He was the only western star to be listed among the top ten moneymakers from 1938-1942. In 1942, Autry was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song for "Be Honest With Me" from his film, Ridin' on a Rainbow. The Gene Autry Show was televised on CBS from 1950-1956, and The Adventures of Champion, which starred Autry's horse, also ran on CBS from 1955-1956. Scheduled opposite the popular series, Rin Tin Tin, it was cancelled in mid-season. Autry's business interests included a radio and TV chain, ranches, oil wells, a flying school, a music publishing company (he wrote 200 songs including "Here Comes Santa Claus") and the California Angels baseball team. Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities. While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Corners lightly worn and creased. Lightly toned around edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
