GENE AUTRY
Signed b/w publicity photo of Gene Autry from the knees up, in
uniform and standing in front of an American flag. Accompanied by sheet music
for Autry's At Mail Call Today with a photo of "Sgt. GENE AUTRY" on the
cover. Autry was an Army Air Corps sergeant during World War II.
Photograph signed "Gene Autry" in blue ink. B/w, 7¾x10,
mounted on foam board. Lightly creased. Adhesive residue in upper left corner.
Image is lightly scratched (not visible head-on). Errors in negative were
reproduced in photo. Photo is separating from foam board. Otherwise in fine
condition. Accompanied by: Unsigned sheet music. 4 pages, 9x11¾, 1
sheet folded, front and verso. With pencil notations inside in unknown hand.

music is glued shut. Adhesive residue at top and bottom edges. Light tear at
bottom edge. Rounded edges. Otherwise in fine condition. Gene Autry joined the
United States Army Air Corps in 1942. He helped ferry fuel and other supplies
over the Himalayan Mountains to the China-India-Burma theatre, then was
reassigned to the USO after the war. Autry was discharged in 1946. Autry
(1907-1998, born Orvon Grover Autry in Tioga, Texas), the original singing
cowboy, appeared in his first western in 1934. He was the only western star
to be listed among the top ten moneymakers from 1938 to 1942. In 1942, Autry
was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song for Be Honest With
Me from his film Ridin' on a Rainbow. The Gene Autry
Show was televised on CBS from 1950 to 1956, and The Adventures of
Champion, which starred Autry's horse, also ran on CBS from 1955 to
1956. Scheduled opposite the popular series, Rin Tin Tin, it was
cancelled in mid-season. Autry's business interests included a radio
and TV chain, ranches, oil wells, a flying school, a music publishing company
(he wrote 200 songs including "Here Comes Santa Claus") and the California
Angels baseball team.
