GENE ALLEN
His signed receipt for $8,949.50 from Paramount Pictures (for 2 weeks travel expenses),
1959
Receipt signed: "Gene Allen", 8¼x5¾ No place, 1959 May 19. Allen acknowledges receipt of
$8,949.50 from Paramount Pictures Corporation for "personal living expenses" of $639.25
per day for the period May 17-30, 1959. The payment is accounted as a Traveling Expense.
Gene Allen (1918-2015) was a movie art director specializing in set decoration. He won an
Oscar for his work on My Fair Lady (1965) and was nominated for two more (A Star is
Born (1954); Les Girls, 1957). Allen was a busy man in 1959, no doubt justifying this large
travel expense. He worked on two films for Paramount which appeared in 1960, both starring
Sophia Loren: A Breath of Scandal and Heller in Pink Tights). The travel expense was more
likely incurred on the former film, which included an international cast (including Maurice
Chevalier as well as Loren) and European locations. Heller was set in the American West. He
got to work with another famed beauty (Marilyn Monroe) for the 1960 release of Let's
Make Love. Torn at top left corner and top left edge. Lightly toned and creased. Bottom edge
ragged. 1 vertical fold crease through center. Staple hole at center of left edge. Otherwise, fine
condition.
