GENE SARAZEN and BYRON NELSON
Gene Sarazen and Byron Nelson sign a group publicity photograph before one of their tournaments.
Photograph signed: "Gene Sarazen" and "Byron/Nelson". B/w, 10x8. Neatly affixed to cardboard. GENE SARAZEN (1902-1999) won two U.S. Opens, three PGA titles (including the first two, 1922-1923), one Masters and one British Open. He is one of only five golfers to win all four major golf tournaments. He won the 1935 Masters with the most famous shot in golf history, holing his second shot from 220 yards out for a double eagle on Augusta's par 5 fifteenth hole. He scored a hole-in-one in the British Open at the age of 71. In later years he was a popular golf commentator. American golfer BYRON NELSON (1912-2006) was called a "mechanical" golfer because his play was so consistent. Nelson, who won the Masters in 1937 and 1942, the U.S. Open in 1939 and the PGA Championship in 1940 and 1945, won a record 11 consecutive golf tournaments in 1945. He was elected to the PGA Hall of Fame in 1953 and the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974. Ink note (unknown hand) and stamp mark on verso (no show through). Fine condition.
