GENE TUNNEY
The World Heavyweight Champion sends his autograph in the year he retired from the ring.
Signature: "Gene Tunney" on integral leaf of TLS: "Gladys Calvert", 4p, 6¼x8. New York City, circa 1928. Calvert's letter was written from New York City to Tunney on July 28, 1928, and mentions Tunney's victory in a fight against Tom Heeney two days earlier; it was Tunney's last fight. In part: "Congratulations, on your victory Thursday P.M. As this was the first time I attended a fight can say I enjoyed every minute of it. I knew you would win...." James Joseph "Gene" Tunney (1897-1978) captured the world heavyweight boxing crown by defeating Jack Dempsey in a unanimous 10-round decision (1926). He then won a 10-round rematch after coming back from a controversial long count (1927), before picking up one more easy purse and then retiring (1928). The highly literate and articulate Tunney served on the boards of several corporations. During WWII, he was director of athletics and fitness for the U.S. Navy. His son, John, was a U.S. Senator from California (1971-1977). Lightly creased with folds, vertical fold a the first "n" in Tunney. Slightly soiled and stained. Overall, fine condition.
