GENE TUNNEY
Vintage 11x14 photo in boxing gear of his era, signed the year he won his controversial "long count" rematch with Jack Dempsey
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Maurice Davis/with very best wishes/Gene Tunney/Jan 6 -27". B/w 11x14. Gene Tunney (1897-1978) captured the world heavyweight boxing crown by defeating Jack Dempsey in a unanimous 10-round decision (1926), won a 10-round rematch after coming back from a controversial long count (1927), picked up one more easy purse and then retired (1928). The highly literate and articulate Tunney served on the boards of several corporations. During World War II, he was director of athletics and fitness for the U.S. Navy. A veteran of World War I, Tunney had been heavyweight champion of the American Expeditionary Force in France in 1919. His son John was a Senator from California (1971-1977). When he inscribed this photo, Tunney had been World Heavyweight Champion for less than 4 months, having defeated Dempsey for the first time on September 23, 1926. Corners cut. Toned with minor surface creases. Smeared at "best wishes", but legible. pin-sized hole at center left edge. Nail-sized ink stain at right upper edge. Multiple pin-sized ink stains throughout picture. Pencil note and ink stamp (William Morris 1560 Broadway New York City) on verso. Otherwise fine condition.
