GENE TUNNEY
Using his rare, legal signature, Tunney confers Power of Attorney on the manager of his real estate interests.
Document signed: "James J. Tunney", 2p, 8x12½. Monmouth County, New Jersey, 1931 January 22. Tunney designates Harry A. Hawkins of Red Bank, N.J. as his sufficient and lawful attorney to sign and execute lease agreements on Tunney's properties in the County, to collect rents, and to manage and maintain the properties. Signed and notarized on p2. Enclosed with metal brads in a paper binder. Gene Tunney (1897-1978) captured the world heavyweight boxing crown by defeating Jack Dempsey in a unanimous 10-round decision (1926), won a 10-round rematch after coming back from a controversial long count (1927), picked up one more easy purse and then retired (1928). The highly literate and articulate Tunney served on the boards of several corporations. During World War II, he was director of athletics and fitness for the U.S. Navy. His son John was a Senator from California (1971-1977). Signatures by Tunney using his legal name are quite rare! Horizontal folds. One-fourth inch paper separation at right edge of lower fold in binder. Paperclip impression at top and bottom. Otherwise, fine condition.
