Hand-cut silhouette signed and dated by the former champ, with ink note on verso by the artist, Betty Kaufman
Original Art signed: "Gene Tunney/June 23, 1936", 3x5 card. Black profile, approximately 1¼x2½ overall, affixed at center. Artist Betty Kaufman specialized in hand-cut silhouettes like this one, which she affixed to cards had invited celebrities to sign. Kaufman's ink note on verso: "Born Jan. 1/Looked like his/son, he said". James Joseph "Gene" Tunney (1897-1978) captured the world heavyweight boxing crown by defeating Jack Dempsey in a unanimous 10-round decision (1926). He then won a 10-round rematch after coming back from a controversial long count (1927), before picking up one more easy purse and then retiring (1928). The highly literate and articulate Tunney served on the boards of several corporations. During WWII, he was director of athletics and fitness for the U.S. Navy. His son, John, was a U.S. Senator from California (1971-1977). Minor creases at blank corners, nicked at blank right edge. Lightly soiled. Two stains from photo corners at upper blank margins, light show through from photo corners at lower right. Otherwise, fine condition.
