GENE TUNNEY
The boxer writes a letter to a friend, thanking him for his note congratulating his recent business venture, and apologizing for the poor construction of his own note.
Typed Letter signed: "Gene Tunney", 1 page, 7x10½. December 28, 1940. New York City, New York. . In full: "Dear Curtis: Thanks for your congratulatory note of the twenty-first and the Bakon-Yeast, which you sent to my friends. I heard from several of them and they certainly like it. In haste, Sincerely yours". Post script: "Pardon the brevity and poor construction of this note. I had to call in a local stenographer to help clean up my holiday mail and have learnt something about native transcription." Gene Tunney (1897-1978) captured the world heavyweight boxing crown by defeating Jack Dempsey in a unanimous 10-round decision (1926), won a 10-round rematch after coming back from a controversial long count (1927), picked up one more easy purse and then retired (1928). The highly literate and articulate Tunney served on the boards of several corporations. During World War II, he was director of athletics and fitness for the U.S. Navy. His son John was a Senator from California (1971-1977). Normal mailing folds. Lightly toned. Staple holes. Corners slightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
