GENERAL ALEXANDER M. HAIG, JR.
B/w photo of Four-Star General Alexander M. Haig in uniform, signed with his "Best wishes". Haig was President Richard Nixon's Chief of Staff and President Ronald Reagan's Secretary of State.
Photograph signed: "Best wishes/Al Haig" in gold ink. Blue ink notation in unknown hand and price tag on verso. B/w, 7¾x9¾ overall, 6¼x9 image, one surface. Four-star general Haig (1924-2010), who served in Korea and Vietnam, is credited with keeping the government going while President Richard Nixon was embroiled in the Watergate scandal. In 1968, Secretary of State Henry Kissinger had appointed Haig as military advisor to the National Security Council. In 1973, Haig replaced H. R. Haldeman as Nixon's Chief of Staff, but resigned six weeks after the President to become Supreme Commander of the NATO forces in Europe (1974-1979). In 1981, Haig was named President Ronald Reagan's first Secretary of State, but unexpectedly resigned in 1982, presumably over disagreements regarding foreign policy. He sought the Republican Presidential nomination in 1988. Fine condition.
