GENERAL ALEXANDER M. HAIG, JR.
Alexander M. Haig, Jr. signed this letter, typed on stationery of the
Supreme Allied Commander, Europe in 1978, to thank the recipient for her
birthday wishes.
Typed letter signed "Al" as Supreme Allied Commander,
Europe in blue ink. 1p, 7x10¼, on stationery of the Supreme Allied
Commander, Europe. 1978 December 11. Addressed to Toni Currin, Dillon,
South Carolina. In full: "Dear Toni: Thank you for your thoughtfulness in
sending me your birthday wishes. I did indeed have a happy day and wanted you to
know that your wishes were appreciated. With best regards, Sincerely." Four-star
general Haig (1924-2010), who served in Korea and Vietnam, is credited
with keeping the government going while President Richard Nixon was embroiled in
the Watergate scandal. In 1968, Secretary of State Henry Kissinger had
appointed Haig as military advisor to the National Security Council. In
1973, Haig replaced H. R. Haldeman as Nixon's Chief of Staff, but
resigned six weeks after the President to become Supreme Commander of the
NATO forces in Europe (1974-1979).In 1981, Haig was named
President Ronald Reagan's first Secretary of State, but unexpectedly
resigned in 1982, presumably over disagreements regarding foreign policy. He
sought the Republican Presidential nomination in 1988. Fine
condition.
