ALFRED M. GRUENTHER. ALS: "Alfred M. Gruenther", 1p,
6¾x10¼. Washington, 1970 November 25. To Mr. Sanders. In part:
"Upon my return last night from a trip I found your letter awaiting me. It
gave me a bit of a shock, and this is the reason: I had just returned from
Portland where I had spoken at an English-speaking Union dinner the night before
my first flash was: How in the world did George Sanders get a photo to me that
quickly?" Then I came to life and realized that it was probably taken on my last
trip to Portland...." In 1941, Gruenther was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff
of the Third Army; Brigadier General Eisenhower was Chief of Staff. In 1943, he
was named Chief of Staff of General Mark W. Clark's Fifth Army in North Africa
and Italy. Paper clip impression at top blank margin. Fine condition.
