ALFRED M. GRUENTHER
The Deputy Chief of Staff writes to thank Mr. F. M. Young, President of the Young Radiator Company
Typed Letter Signed: "Alfred M. Gruenther," in black ink, and typed, "General, United States Army." 1 page, 8x10. Allied Powers Europe Supreme Commander, March 27,1956. In full: "Dear Mr. Young: How very kind of you to send me a congratulatory note upon my selection for the Laetare Medal. Although I still do not know why they selected me, I am very proud and very grateful. That persons such as yourself would consider it merited certainly adds to the honor. I am delighted to hear from a friend of Homer. I saw him last week in Washington, and he seems to be holding up well there. Many, many thanks for you thoughtfulness. In case one of these days you may make a trip to Europe, a visit to SHAPE is a 'must' in your itinerary. I should very much like to meet you and to show you what we are trying to do. Sincerely." In 1941, Alfred M. Gruenther (1899-1983) was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff of the Third Army; Brigadier General Eisenhower was Chief of Staff. In 1943, he was named Chief of Staff of General Mark W. Clark's Fifth Army in North Africa and Italy. Toned. Normal mailing folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
