typed, "General, United States Army." 1 page, 8x10. Allied Powers
Europe Supreme Commander, March 27,1956. In full: "Dear Mr. Young: How
very kind of you to send me a congratulatory note upon my selection for the
Laetare Medal. Although I still do not know why they selected me, I am very
proud and very grateful. That persons such as yourself would consider it merited
certainly adds to the honor. I am delighted to hear from a friend of Homer. I
saw him last week in Washington, and he seems to be holding up well there. Many,
many thanks for you thoughtfulness. In case one of these days you may make a
trip to Europe, a visit to SHAPE is a 'must' in your itinerary. I should very
much like to meet you and to show you what we are trying to do. Sincerely."
In 1941, Alfred M. Gruenther (1899-1983) was appointed Deputy
Chief of Staff of the Third Army; Brigadier General Eisenhower was Chief of
Staff. In 1943, he was named Chief of Staff of General Mark W. Clark's
Fifth Army in North Africa and Italy. Toned. Normal mailing folds.
