Re: Women at West Point.
TLS: "A.J. Goodpaster" as Superintendent, 1p, 8½x11. United States Military Academy, West Point, New York, 1981 May 29. To Mr. J. Fawls, Floral Park, N.Y. In part: "Our nation is blessed with many fine women leaders, in the military as in other fields. Several women have risen to the rank of general officer in the military services, and I am confident that the women graduates from West Point will before long be serving among the leaders of the country. We recently graduated our second class with women cadets. We find them to be highly competitive in all areas of academics, sports and military training...." General Goodpaster served as Deputy Commander of U.S. forces in Vietnam and Commander of NATO (1969-1974) after which he retired from active duty. In 1977, he became thefirst officer ever called out of retirement to serve as Superintendent of West Point. His appointment was seen as an attempt to restore the Academy quickly to normal in the wake of a cheating scandal involving more than 130 cadets and of a general debate over the traditional honor code. The first woman was graduated from West Point in 1980. Fine condition.
