FDC honoring the Golden Anniversary of United States Air Mail Service, 10¢ Air Mail stamp affixed, postmarked Washington, D.C., May 15, 1968, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. BENJAMIN OLIVER DAVIS JR. (1912-2002), the commander of the Tuskegee Airmen during WWII, was the first Black Air Force One-Star General. Davis was awarded his fourth star by President Clinton in 1998, effectively making him a general. ROBERT LEE SCOTT JR. (1908-2006) is best known as the Commander of the Flying Tigers, formed by General Claire Chennult, during WWII. Later fighter commanding officer of the China Air Task Force, which would eventually come to be known as the 14th Air Force, Scott flew 388 combat missions, shooting down 13 enemy aircraft to become one of the earliest aces of the war. The recipient of two Silver Stars, three Distinguished Flying Crosses, and three Air Medals, Scott has also authored several books, including God is My Co-pilot and Boring a Hole in the Sky.
