The one-star general pens his name and the year he was promoted to the rank of brigadier general on this first day cover honoring the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force First Day Cover signed: "Benjamin O. Davis Jr./ promoted to brigadier general/ US Air Force October 1954", in blue ink, 6½x3¾. FDC honoring the 50th Anniversary of the U.S. Air Force, 6¢ stamp affixed, postmarked Washington, D.C., August 1, 1957, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Cachet illustrations of Wright brothers first successful plane and of a modern Air Force bomber and fighter. Despite this designated anniversary, a U.S. Air Force fully separate from the Army has only existed since the National Security Act of 1947. Benjamin Oliver Davis, Jr. (1912-2002), the commander of the Tuskegee Airmen during WWII, was the first Black Air Force One-Star General. Davis was awarded his fourth star by President Clinton in 1998. Fine condition.
