Chidlaw (1900-1977) graduated from West Point in 1922. In the peacetime army
and even at the start of World War II, he specialized in material procurement,
but also held commands in the Mediterranean Theater, including command of
tactical air forces there (1945). After the war, as head of the Air
Material Command, he oversaw the development of the first US jet engine and
aircraft. He was commander of the Continental Air Defense Command from
1954 until his retirement in 1955. Chidlaw was promoted to lieutenant
general (3 stars) in 1947 and to general (4 stars) in 1951. Corners worn and
creased. Signature light but legible. Pin size stains at center bottom edge.
Mounting residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
