GENERAL CHARLES AUGUSTE FROSSARD
The nineteenth-century French General, governor to Prince Imperial Louis Napoleon, signs name in black ink
Autograph note signed: "Gnl. Ch. Frossard/ Governor of P.A.I." in black ink. 5x2¾ autograph card. February 16, 1870. In full (roughly translated): "Permit me to offer you a photograph of the Prince Imperial". General Charles Auguste Frossard (1807-1875) was a French commander, who after studying at the Ecole polytechnique was posted to the engineers and took part of the in the 1849 siege of Rome (where the French restored the Pope who had been taken by Italian liberals), and in the siege of Sevastopol in 1855 during the Crimean War. Frossard was promoted to general of division in 1860, as well as chief of engineers in the Italian campaign of 1859. It was there that he attracted the notice of Emperor Napoleon III, who in 1867 made him chief of his military household and Governor to Louis Napoleon, Prince Imperial (took care of his upbringing/education). From 1866-1870 he was selected to prepare for the inevitable war with Prussia, and on the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War he was given by Napoleon the choice between a corps command or post of chief engineer at headquarters, of which he chose the former (II coprs); he held the position at the Battle of Spicheren in 1870, as well as partook in other battles around Metz and in the surrender of Bazaine's army. He published his report, Rapport sur les operations du 2 corps in 1872. Toned. Slightly soiled. Corners rounded. Otherwise, fine condition.
