COLIN POWELL
Colin Powell sends a typed letter of thanks for the letter.
Typed Letter Signed: "Cl. L. Powell" as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, 1p, 7¼x7¾. Washington, D.C., 1993 January 14. On official stationery to Ms. Sophie Nelson, New Hope, Minnesota. In full: "Thank you for the kind words in your recent letter. I do not aspire to any political office and am concentrating on fulfilling my duties as Chairman. Enclosed is the autographed photograph you requested." Photograph not present. Signed eight months before the decorated officer retired after 35 years of military service. Colin Luther Powell, a Vietnam veteran and former national security advisor to President Reagan (1987), was promoted to Four-Star General in April 1989. From October 1, 1989-September 30, 1993, he served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, overseeing 28 crises, including the invasion of Panama (1989) and Operation Desert Storm during the 1991 Persian Gulf War. After he published his autobiography, My American Journey, and toured to promote it in 1995, there was speculation that he would run for President in 1996. Powell, who has twice been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, announced that he would not seek any political office in 1996. From 2001-2005, Powell was the highest-ranking Black government official in U.S. history as George W. Bush's Secretary of State. Fine condition.
