DESMOND YOUNG
He signs an Indian First Day Cover honoring Indian reformer Gopabandhu Das
First Day Cover signed: "Desmond Young", 6x3½. FDC honoring Indian nationalist and social reformer Gopabandhu Das, Postmarked Bombay, India, April 1, 1964, stamp affixed, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. British Brigadier General Desmond Young (1896-1966) was commanding the 10th Indian Brigade in North Africa when he was captured by German General Erwin Rommel's Afrika Korps (June 1942). As a prisoner he met Rommel, and after the war visited the general's family. His biography, Rommel: the Desert Fox (1950), was made into a film the next year, with Young playing himself. Young wrote other books, including one on India (Fountain of the Elephants, 1959), but it is for his groundbreaking study of Rommel that he is best remembered. Worn and lightly soiled at corners. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
