EDWARD C. MEYER
As US Army Chief of Staff, the Eagle Scout writes in high praise of
the Boy Scout movement and its influence on his life.
Typed Letter signed: "E. C. Meyer," 1 page, 7x8½. No place,
1983 April 11. On his 4-star general's letterhead to Joseph Kover,
Flushing, New York. In full: "Thanks for your recent letter requesting
my feelings on how scouting helps to build better citizens. I became involved in
scouting at a very early age, as many boys do. I consider myself to be a better
person, both spiritually and emotionally as a result as a result of the
experience I lived in scouting. Scouting gave me an opportunity to expand my
knowledge through living and learning the basics of manhood and life. These
experiences have remained with me and have helped to guide me through life. I am
still proud to be an eagle scout, and the discipline I learned in achieving that
rank has stood me in good stead for nearly 40 years. Sincerely". Edward
C. Meyer (b. 1928), a company commander in Korea, led the 2nd Battalion,
5th Cavalry in Vietnam (1965-1966). Rising through increasingly important

(1974-1975). He was Chief of Staff of the US Army (1979-1983). Normal
