Ornate military vignettes of the Army of the Cumberland with images of Major General D.C. Buell at left, Major General W.S. Rosecrans at right and Major General George H. Thomas at bottom. Engraved by Strowbridge & Co. of Cincinnati. In part: "Gates P. Thruston Jr. is a member of the Society of the Army of the Cumberland instituted by the officers and soldiers of said Army at Cincinnati Ohio on the 6th day of February A.D. 1868 for the purpose of commemorating its fortunes and achievements...for the further purpose of uniting in bonds of perpetual friendship the members thereof Eldest son of General In Testimony Whereof the President and Secretary have Gates P. Thruston hereunto set their hands and seals...No. 2 on list of Sons of Veterans...." The Army of the Cumberland, originally the Army of the Ohio, was commanded by General D.C. Buell. It was renamed when General W.S. Rosecrans took command on October 30, 1862. Rosecrans was succeeded by General George H. Thomas on October 16, 1863. Operating primarily in Tennessee, Kentucky and Georgia, this Army was important in the battles of Mill Springs, Shiloh, Perryville, Stone's River, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge. It was comprised mainly of regiments from Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. GATES THRUSTON VOLUNTEERED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE WAR AS A CAPTAIN IN THE 1ST OHIO INFANTRY. He was promoted to Major and Assistant Adjutant-General in 1863 and then to Lieutenant Colonel for special acts of gallantry at Shiloh and Stone's River. He was brevetted Colonel and Brigadier General of Volunteers for gallantry at Chickamauga. This appointment was issued to his son. Lightly foxed at margins. Light stain at top blank edge. Folds, not at signature. Fine condition.
