COSMONAUT PIONEERS Seven cosmonauts, including three of "the firsts" in space, pen their names on this commemorative cover Commemorative Cover signed: "Titov/12.4.76", "A. Soviet stamp honors the 15th anniversary of the flight of the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin, on April 12, 1961. Postmarked Moscow, USSR, April 20, 1976. Cachet pictures Gagarin. GHERMAN TITOV (1935-2000), the second Russian in space, was the first man to spend more than a day in space (Vostok 2, August 6-7, 1961). He died on September 20, 2000 at the age of 65. ALEXEI LEONOV (b.1934) was the first to "walk in space" during his March 18-19, 1965 Voshkod 2 flight. PAVEL POPOVICH (1930-2009) flew aboard Vostok 4 (August 12-15, 1962), coming within three miles of Vostok 3, launched August 11th. VALERY BYKOVSKY (b.1934) spent a then record 119 hours in space aboard Vostok 5 (June 14-19, 1963). VALENTINA TERESHKOVA (b.1937), the first woman in space, flew solo aboard Vostok 6 (June 16-19, 1963), passing within three miles of Vostok 5. BORIS VOLYNOV (b.1934) was aboard Soyuz 5 (January 15-18, 1969) when it docked with Soyuz 4, launched January 14th. ANATOLY FILIPCHENKO (b.1928) was aboard Soyuz 7 (October 12-17, 1969), which orbited the Earth with Soyuz 6 (October 11-16, 1969) and Soyuz 8 (October 13-18, 1969).
