GHERMAN TITOV
The second man to orbit Earth signs a Hungarian postage stamp created to honor his
achievement
Stamp signed: "Titov" 1¾x1¼. Hungarian 60 fillér stamp bearing Titov's image and a fanciful
version of his space vehicle. Gherman Titov (1935-2000) was the second Soviet cosmonaut
in space (following Yuri Gagarin). Titov, aboard Vostok 2, was the first to spend more
than one day in space (August 6-7, 1961), the first to take photos from space, and the first to
pilot a spacecraft. The first American to make a full orbit was John Glenn in February 1961.)
To this day, Titov remains the youngest ever space traveler (25). He was a test pilot until
Gagarin's death in 1968, when the Soviet government decided it couldn't afford to lose
another space hero. Rising to the rank of Colonel-General in the space program, Titov became
a Communist member of the Russian Duma after the fall of the Soviet Union. Fine
condition.
