GENERAL HARRY S. AURAND
The General declines to comment about the war crimes trials.
Comprises: (1) Photograph signed:
"Harry S. Aurand/Lt Gen, US Army Rtd". B/w, 8x10. Lightly creased at upper right background, touching writing. File nicks at blank left edge. Ink note (unknown hand) and photographer's stamp from Hawaii on verso (no show through). (2) TLS: "H.S. Aurand", 1p, 8½x11. Honolulu, Hawaii, 1957 September 15. To H. Keith Thompson, New York. In full: "Your letter of 25 August 1957 asked me to give consideration to participating in a collection of opinions concerning the war crimes trials in general and their effect on Admiral Doenitz in particular. I do not believe that I desire to have my opinions on this subject made public. I have too little information on which to base them. Thank you for the opportunity you gave me to join the distinguished group who are speaking out about this matter, but I cannot do so." Slightly creased. Fine condition. Sentenced to ten years in prison at Nuremberg, German Admiral KARL DÖNITZ was released from the Berlin-Spandau prison in October 1956, a year before this letter. THOMPSON eventually published his collection of opinions in 1976 in Dönitz at Nuremberg: A Re-Appraisal. Each copy was personally autographed by Dönitz (1891-1980). HENRY S. AURAND commanded the U.S. Army in the Pacific in WWII. After the war, he served as the U.S. Army's Director of Service, Supply and Procurement. Two items.
